Teen Read Week is an opportunity to help struggling readers

CHICAGO – The Young Adult Library Services Association encourages schools and libraries everywhere to reach out to struggling teen readers who would benefit from access to libraries and reading materials, including during Teen Read Week, Oct. 18-24, 2015, which is being celebrated with the theme of “Get Away @ your library.”

Nearly one in four eighth-graders in the U.S. cannot read at a basic level, according to Kids Count.  Libraries can play a role in helping more teens become proficient readers, and Teen Read Week is a great opportunity to reach out to teens who are reluctant or struggling readers.

YALSA recommends the following resources to help libraries increase their impact and help more teens build the literacies skills they need to succeed in school and prepare for college, careers and life.
