Author Biography

   John Robert McCloskey was born September 15, 1914 in Hamilton, Ohio.  He died in July, 2003 in Maine.  McCloskey attended the Vesper George Art School and the National Academy of Design.  He worked as a commercial artist and as a mural painter.  The author and his wife, Margaret, had one daughter, Sarah.  He was a well-known advocate of art education in the schools.
   McCloskey is best known for his picture books.  "Make Way for Ducklings" won the Caldecott Medal in 1942.  "Blueberries for Sal" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1949.  "One Morning in Maine" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1953, as was "Journey Cake, Ho!" in 1954.  "Time of Wonder" won the Caldecott Medal in 1958.
