Expressive illustrations in ink and watercolors suit the engaging premise of a Dalmatian trying desperately to help those she loves. When her human family puts on a pirate show, it is Poppy's job to protect the treasure. Though the pup injures her eye and is forced to wear a plastic cone around her neck, she refuses to miss out on all of the action. After the family members realize that the shiny new necklace Dad bought for Mom's birthday is missing, Poppy uncovers this treasure's hidden location and ensures that Mom's party proceeds without a hitch. Illustrations reinforce the action found in the text, while the large font size provides helpful clues for emerging readers. Poppy's thoughts are conveyed through dialogue balloons accentuated over her head.
