He attended the Royal College of Art in London. Sis worked as a filmmaker and was sent to film the Winter Olympics in 1982 in Los Angeles. He defected to the United States rather than returning to Czechoslovakia. The author and his wife Terry Lajtha, a documentary film editor, have a daughter Madeleine Matej. Sis is best known for his picture books. "Komodo!" was a Boston Globe-Horn Book Picture Book Honor Book in 1993, as was "A Small Tall Tale From the Far Far North" in 1994. "Starry Messenger" was a 1997 Caldecott Honor Book and an ALA Notable Children's Book. "Whipping Boy" was the 1987 Newbery Winner. "Tree of Life" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2004.
