Elizabeth George Speare Birthplace: Melrose, MA USA Author Biography Elizabeth Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts on November 21, 1908. She died in 1994. Speare graduated from Smith College and Boston University. She worked for a number of years as a high school English teacher. The author and her husband, Alden, had two children. Speare is best known for her historical fiction. "Witch of Blackbird Pond" and "Bronze Bow" won the Newbery Medals, in 1959 and 1962, respectively. "Sign of the Beaver" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1984. She received the 1989 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her lasting contribution to literature for children.
