McCloskey attended the Vesper George Art School and the National Academy of Design. He worked as a commercial artist and as a mural painter. The author and his wife, Margaret, had one daughter, Sarah. He was a well-known advocate of art education in the schools. McCloskey is best known for his picture books. "Make Way for Ducklings" won the Caldecott Medal in 1942. "Blueberries for Sal" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1949.
