Scott O'Dell Website:www.scottodell.com Birthplace: Los Angeles , CA USA Author Biography Scott O'Dell was born in Los Angeles, California on May 23, 1898. He died October 15, 1989. O'Dell attended Occidental College, the University of Wisconsin and Stanford University. He joined the Army to fight in World War I but the war was over before he finished his training. He also joined the Air Force during World War II. He worked as a set dresser for movies and for Palmer Photoplay as a movie critic. He worked in newspapers and wrote adult novels before he started writing exclusively for young adults. The author was married to Elizabeth Hall. His hobbies included travel, chopping wood and gardening. He is also known by his given name of Odell Gabriel Scott. O'Dell is best known for his historical fiction. There is a major award for children's historical fiction that is named in his honor. "The Island of the Blue Dolphins" won the Newbery Medal in 1961. "The King's Fifth" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1967, as was "The Black Pearl" in 1968 and "Sing Down the Moon" in 1971. He was awarded the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1972 for the body of his work. The author was awarded the Regina Medal for his work in 1978.
