Hugh Lofting Birthplace: Maidenhead, England Author Biography Hugh Lofting was born in Maidenhead, England on January 14, 1886. He died September 26, 1947. Lofting attended Mount St. Mary's College. He served in World War I where he began drawing and writing stories about Doctor Dolittle in letters to his children. Lofting also worked as a surveyor and a civil engineer. After the war he moved from England to the United States. He was married three times and had two children, Elizabeth and Colin. Lofting is best known for his twelve novels about Doctor Dolittle.
