Charles Dickens Birthplace: Landport, England Author Biography Charles Dickens was born in Landport, England on February 7, 1812. He died June 9, 1870. Dickens did not have much formal education. He had to start working at the age of 12 because his father was put in debtors' prison. Dickens worked as a legal clerk, a reporter, an editor and he was an amateur actor. The author and his wife, Catherine, had ten children. When they were separated after 22 years of marriage nine of the children stayed with Charles and one son lived with Catherine.
