Author Biography

   Joy Cowley was born August 7, 1936 in Levin, New Zealand.  She attended Pharmacy College and worked as a pharmacist's assistant, a farm worker, an editor for a children's newspaper and as a freelance photographer.  Cowley first began writing children's books to help her son with his reading.  She and her husband, Ted, have four children and nine grandchildren.  Her hobbies include sailing, gardening, fishing, and weaving.
   Cowley is best known for her picture book fiction and nonfiction. "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2000.
