Rudyard Kipling Birthplace: Bombay, India Author Biography Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India on December 30, 1865. He was sent away from his family to live in England to attend school at a young age. While in England, he was abused and beaten. Because of this upheaval and mistreatment, Kipling suffered throughout his life from insomnia. These early experiences influenced his imagination and his career as a writer. The author was later educated at United Services College, a boarding school in North Devon, England. He then worked as a journalist and assistant editor. Kipling published his first volume of poetry in 1886. The author married Caroline Starr Balestier in 1892. They were the parents of two children, Josephine and John. Josephine died at a young age while the family was living in the United States. John was killed during World War I. The deaths of his children deeply affected the author and his subsequent writing. Best known for writing short stories and poetry, Kipling won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. The author died on January 18, 1936 and he is buried in "Poet's Corner" of Westminster Abbey.
