Margot Zemach Birthplace: Author Biography Margot Zemach was born November 30, 1931. She drew as a young child to keep herself company and to make herself and others laugh. The artist first began illustrating books written by her husband, Harve, in 1959. Zemach illustrated over forty books during her career. "Judge, an Untrue Tale" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1970. "Duffy and the Devil" won the Caldecott Medal in 1974. "It Could Always Be Worse" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1978. The illustrator died May 21, 1989 of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
