Walter Farley Birthplace: Syracuse, NY USA Author Biography Walter Farley was born on June 26, 1920 in Syracuse, New York. He was educated at Columbia University. Farley was in the U.S. Army and worked as a reporter. The author and his wife, Rosemary Lutz, are the parents of Pamela, Alice, Steve, and Tim. Farley's hobbies included sailing, riding horses, and travel. Best known for his novels, the author's Black Stallion series grew from his love for horses when he was a small boy. Farley began to write his first book, "The Black Stallion," while he was a student at Brooklyn's Eramus Hall High. He finished it while he was an undergraduate at Columbia University in 1941. Shortly before his death in October of 1989, the author finished his twenty-first book in the series, "The Young Black Stallion," with his son Steve.
