Eleanor Estes Birthplace: New Haven, CT USA Author Biography Eleanor Estes was born on May 9, 1906 in New Haven, Connecticut. She was educated at the Pratt Institute Library School and worked as a children's librarian. Best known for her fiction for children, Estes won Newbery Honors for "The Middle Moffat" in 1943, "Rufus M." in 1944 and "The Hundred Dresses" in 1945.
