He was educated at the Art Students League. Sendak worked as a toystore window dresser and illustrated for the comic strip, Mutt and Jeff. He designed toys, theatre sets and opera costumes. Sendak was best known for his picture books. "Where the Wild Things Are" won the Caldecott Medal in 1964. These were all Caldecott Honor Books-- "A Very Special House" in 1954, "What Do You Say, Dear?" in 1959, "The Moon Jumpers" in 1960, "Little Bear's Visit" in 1962, "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" in 1963 and "Outside Over There" in 1982. The author and illustrator was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen International Medal in 1970 and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children in 1983.
