He attended public and private schools in Austria before dropping out and emigrating to the United States. Bemelmans was a waiter at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York and opened his own restaurant. The author and his wife Madeline had one daughter, Barbara. Bemelmans is known primarily for his picture books, although he wrote some adult books as well.
