She received a B.A. in Slavic Languages and Literature with a Russian focus graduating magna cum laude in 1981 from Princeton University. She earned a Master's degree in Slavic Languages in 1985 from Columbia University. Bolden received the Coretta Scott King Author in 2006 for Maritcha. In addition to being a versatile and prolific writer, Bolden maintains a busy appearance schedule, visiting schools, book fairs, libraries, book stores, presenting at workshops and giving radio and television interviews.
