Summary: In 1950, Marguerite Higgins began her job at the New York Herald Tribune as the bureau chief of the Tokyo desk. Higgins flew to Korea and was present when North Koreans invaded Seoul with Soviet tanks. She fled with the refugees heading south but was trapped in North Korea. She escaped to an American Navy base, but there, she was told that women didn’t belong on the frontlines. She appealed to General Douglas MacArthur, and he personally lifted the ban on female war correspondents.
