Booklist - 02/01/2020 In this trilingual poetic tribute to the manifold nature of fire, told in first-person, Fuegito, or Little Fire, describes its rise as a small spark from “a stone that strikes another,” or a “bolt that quickly flashes across the sky,” to the powerful element we know it to be. Fire may not receive as much devoted literature as other elements, but Argueta concisely depicts its potential, from its more dangerous manifestations like volcanic eruptions and wildfires to its more familiar presence in our kitchens or campfires. Naturally, swirls of orange, red, and yellow dominate the illustrations, with occasional backdrops of deep blues to offset the fiery hues. Alcántara reinforces fire’s place in nature by depicting landscapes like the desert and mountains with the same orange palette as the flames. Spanish and English stanzas appear on the same page, but the latter never quite strike the same confident rhythm. The Nahuat version of the poem appears at the end. Pairs well with Pat Mora’s bilingual Water Rolls, Water Rises / El agua rueda, el agua sube (2014). - Copyright 2020 Booklist.
