School Library Journal - 01/01/2017 Gr 4–6—Enthusiastic Jack Russell terrier Fenway and his favorite human, Hattie, encounter a threat (or friend, depending on who is being asked) in the shape of a bunny, in their second adventure. Hattie is asked to bunnysit for neighbors. Fenway is shocked and appalled that she would take this evil, large-toothed creature into their home. He is especially upset because he has been blamed for ruining the Food Lady's (Hattie's mother) garden. Fenway investigates and finds that an evil group of bunnies are on the loose and getting past all garden fences. As he tries to prevent them from doing their terrible work, he keeps looking guiltier. The misunderstandings pile up, and Fenway's extreme jealousy of the bunny doesn't help matters. The episodes get rather repetitive, although children will likely enjoy Fenway's earnestness. VERDICT An additional purchase. Recommend Spencer Quinn's "Bowser and Birdie" series to kids who want tightly written, funny mysteries featuring a dog and his girl.—B. Booklist - 01/01/2017 Wild rabbits in the backyard and a pet rabbit in the house have the hyperactive Jack Russell terrier introduced in Fenway and Hattie (2016) feeling surrounded. Not only is he being unfairly blamed for the garden’s devastation, but his beloved young human charge is suddenly dividing her affections for the first time. Fenway’s continual, frantic efforts both to get at the caged bunny (which Hattie is watching for the neighbors) and sniff out the undomesticated ones lead to such a series of catastrophic messes, inside and out, that it may have readers yearning for a dog (and their parents) reconsidering. Still, along with amusing pictures of doggy life punctuated with the “bum-sniffing circle dance” and other interactions with fellow canines, Fenway’s takes on Hattie’s developing relationships with new friends and her progress in learning to take responsibility for her actions provide a rich between-the-lines human plot. In the end, the real garden-wreckers are discovered, the loaner bunny is returned, and Fenway once again has Hattie all to himself . . . more or less. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
