School Library Journal - 04/01/2020 Gr 1–3—This series mixes humor and facts to engage readers. The jokes start on the cover with a pun from the featured animal ("This book is MAA-velous!" says the goat). Layouts present splashes of textual information, mostly arranged in word balloons of varied shapes. A spread on the black bear's senses, for instance, includes interesting information about smell, hearing, and vision, along with a fact about the brain and a "That's extreme!" box about running speed, plus a riddle. Text insets are well placed around the featured photograph, and the color coding and different shapes make the visual presentation pleasing and easy to follow. Photos are useful; many also add to the lighthearted tone. Some spreads use a series of three or four images (numbered and captioned) to convey information. VERDICT A well-executed mixture of facts and humor that should appeal to browsers and reluctant readers. - Copyright 2020 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 04/15/2020 Packed with nods to social media, LOL jokes, and speech bubbles, the Wild Life LOL! series (6 new titles) give off an unexpectedly hip vibe. Goats asks, “What do mountain climbers tell around the campfire? GOAT stories!” Underneath all the silly bells and whistles, though, lies a foundation of solid—and interesting—facts. These include standard topics like habitat and mating, as well as features on the animal’s body, its living and extinct “relatives,” and its interactions with humans, both positive and negative. The number of photos per spread varies, but they always focus on illustrating the animal and the immediate facts presented. The pages are bright and busy, filled with fun extras and more typical nonfiction features (headers, text, diagrams, graphic organizers, wacky facts, etc.). In fact, most of the text comes from extensive captions and diagrams, rather from the body text. Kids will enjoy learning about and LOLing with the animals in this fun series. - Copyright 2020 Booklist.
