Booklist - 05/01/2022 As a member of her school’s gifted and talented program, Ash McNulty starts her day in Ms. Connors’ classroom but spends most of her time in an accelerated, multigrade class taught by Mr. Lopez. Worried because her recent report card included a “Needs Improvement” grade, she feels pressure to win the upcoming Quiz Bowl, and she does win, but only because she photographed the answer sheet, discovered in a teacher’s drawer. A conversation with a new classmate who saw Ash take the pictures leads her to confess that she cheated. Demoted to Ms. Connors’ class, Ash begins to wonder whether the gifted-and-talented designation was mainly a benefit or a source of unwanted pressure for her. Insight comes from unexpected sources. Egan creates a high degree of tension in the early chapters, mirroring the conflict within Ash, a good kid who makes some bad decisions and has to live with the consequences, but just as involving is her later exploration of who she is, where she fits in, and what she really wants. An engaging chapter book. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
