School Library Journal - 02/01/2019 Gr 8 Up—The author of Disasters and Frog Song examines six intriguing missing persons cases (Jimmy Hoffa, D.B. Cooper, Barbara Follett, Amelia Earhart, William Morgan, and two British princes), which span five centuries and two continents. In reverse chronological order, Guiberson profiles the missing persons and contextualizes the times in which they lived, with particulars about labor relations and the mafia, aviation and women's history, the publishing industry, and the Freemasons in Britain and the United States. Details about those involved with the disappearances weigh down the text and are confusing in the chapters about William Morgan and the British princes, respectively, owing to the numerous people involved. Appropriately captioned photographs, maps, and drawings accompany each chapter and convey additional information. The line drawings vary in effectiveness; a couple are hard to distinguish, and most are superfluous to the paintings and photographs already included. Guiberson's well-organized source notes include a mix of juvenile and adult titles. VERDICT The uneven writing and illustrations distract from an intriguing title and topic.—Hilary Writt, Sullivan University, Lexington, KY - Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
