School Library Journal - 12/01/2013 Gr 2–3—Heinrichs offers information about these celebrations and includes not only biological parents, but those who take on the roles as well. The reasons and people given credit for starting these observances are presented in simple terms. Some of the ways to honor mothers and fathers on their special day are derived from other countries. Alley uses pen-and-ink outlines, watercolor, watercolor pencil, and gouache to depict jovial children and expressive adults in a variety of homes and situations. Short poems and quotes are scattered throughout. Longer poems appear in the last chapters. A suggestion of gift ideas and a recipe (that will need some adult assistance) are included. Purchase if you need basic introductions to these holidays.—Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX - Copyright 2013 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
