School Library Journal - 10/01/2008 Gr 2-5-North America's bears-black, grizzly, and polar-are introduced in this attractive presentation made compelling by Mangelsen's full-color photographic delights. Bear mothers and babies are featured throughout, with a mother with two cubs decorating the endpapers, verso, and title page. Starting with the black bear and moving from close-ups to action shots, the creatures are shown eating, sleeping, sitting, standing, climbing, running, and swimming. Hirschi reveals the differences in each bear's hibernation patterns, habitats, diets, size, and population estimates. These short paragraphs are chock-full of information. Beginning researchers as well as young wildlife enthusiasts will find Our Three Bears well suited to their interests.-Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information. - Copyright 2008 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 11/15/2008 Three bears live in North America: the black bear, the grizzly bear, and the polar bear. Hirschi introduces each in a fully illustrated chapter that discusses such topics as the bear’s range, population, behaviors, diet, abilities, and young. Rather than inundating readers with details, the clearly written text works closely with the many photos to inform readers about the lives of these bears in the wild. Occasionally, text superimposed over a photo can be a bit hard to read, but the photographs themselves are outstanding. Wildlife photographer Mangelsen captures some excellent images of bears engaged in varied activities, including a brown bear eating plants, a grizzly slumping sleepily over a log, and a polar bear cub holding on to its mother as she swims. An appended author’s note encourages readers to observe the bears in the wild if possible and discusses their uncertain future. The book concludes with lists of related wildlife-conservation organizations and books for further reading. - Copyright 2008 Booklist.
