Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 05/15/2013 It’s a universally known fact: animals are cute, but baby animals are even cuter. The series title—It’s Fun to Learn about Baby Animals—doesn’t mislead, as each volume offers up-close photos of babies yawning and feeding, accompanied by lengthy captions and an informative main text. Baby Carnivores focuses on a group of meat-eating mammals called carnivora; they have hair or fur and sharp teeth and claws. Readers will learn that there are “thirteen carnivora families and 270 different species,” including the wolf pup, sea lions, and meerkats. After a general introduction to mammals, habitat, and predatory nature, this launches into specific families. A table of contents will help young readers navigate content, which is organized differently by title. A solid starting point for reports and for honing general mammal knowledge. Turns out, it is fun to learn about baby animals. - Copyright 2013 Booklist.

School Library Journal - 08/01/2013 Gr 2–4—These titles support introductory life-science studies. Carnivores covers animal taxonomy and the food chain and also discusses the species' habitats, characteristics, and behaviors. Color photos include baby carnivores, such as a cuddly polar bear, a lion cub, and a helpless-looking baby ferret. From pygmy jerboas to capybaras, Rodents offers straightforward, comprehensive information. This volume discusses the attributes of mammals before describing specific families. The final page includes an exercise that asks students to decide, "Are they rodents?" The clear color photos display a wide range of creatures. Both titles conclude with a combined illustrated glossary and index, which students working at the rudimentary report-writing level will find helpful. Kids will enjoy learning while building vocabulary and establishing a science foundation.—Kathryn Diman, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Bernard, ME - Copyright 2013 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
