Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 04/01/2019 The versatile gecko, in its many forms, is the star of this entry in the Lizards in the Wild series (6 titles). Two-page chapters, which consist of one page of short, large-type simple sentences and one full-page glossy photograph, walk readers through the gecko's life cycle, habitat, and physical features. The text explains that there is wide variety within the species, and several different types of gecko are mentioned by name. The eye-catching photographs, which showcase the gecko hunting, displaying its camouflage ability, and hatching from an egg, often, though not always, provide visual cues to the text. An ending diagram and glossary round out the nonfiction features, while a further reading section provides confident readers who want to know more with opportunities to extend their learning. An efficient tool for newly independent readers. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.

School Library Journal - 05/01/2019 Gr 3–5—These overviews focus on the most interesting characteristics of wild lizards. Each spread presents a few sentences about habitat, features, or behavior opposite a full-page photograph. Close-up views of particular attributes, such as a gecko's eyes are especially effective. All titles also include visuals of the lizard eating prey (or, in the iguana's case, plants), with the disappointing exception of the Komodo dragon, where a solo photo of a water buffalo is the only related image. Final pages show newly born lizards. The text has an easy-to-read, slightly informal style that conveys facts cohesively, with just a couple missteps. Referring to the Gila monster as a "dragon," for example, could lead to confusion with Komodo dragons. VERDICT This series contains generally appealing titles about high-interest reptiles. - Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
