As part of the Serving Our Country series (6 titles), this beginning-reader-style book introduces youngsters to the impressive variety of duties belonging to the U.S. Coast Guard. Each two-page spread presents one scenario in which the Coast Guard would be called: search and rescue, buoy repair, policing waters, wartime service, icebreaking, and more. A large, crisp photo occupies one page, while the other page features a short paragraph describing how Coasties might help resolve a dangerous or worrisome situation. Glossary-defined vocabulary words appear in bold, and “Force Facts” cut through some pages in a red swath of Coast Guard trivia.
