Booklist - 08/01/2019 During the 1930s, following years of drought and Dust Bowl conditions, seven-year-old Ruby and her family drive from their now-barren Oklahoma farm to California, where they harvest produce for other farmers. Their car runs out of gas just as they reach a migrant worker camp, but frost has ruined the crop. The family has no money for gas, and their food supplies are dwindling. When Dorothea Lange drives up with a camera and asks to take Ma’s picture, she agrees. Widely reproduced, the photo touches people, who donate food to the camp. Inspired by Lange’s iconic photo Migrant Mother (1936), Kulling reimagines this migrant family’s story, changing details to make a more coherent picture book. Appended pages separate truth from fiction and comment on Lange, Ruby Thompson's family, and the period. While more likely to resonate with viewers familiar with the iconic photo, this picture book offers an introduction to the era from a child’s perspective.
