Booklist - 03/15/2020 A camping trip takes one calamitous turn after another as fledgling “Big City Scouts” Louie and Ralphie Ratso try to take their Grandpa Ratso’s scouting motto (“No matter the problem / we’ll solve it ourselves; / we know we can fix it / without any help”) to heart. Spurning both the Big City Scouts Handbook and the advice of diminutive fellow-scout Velma Diggs, the newbies struggle to pitch a tent, forage for berries in a patch of poison ivy, and learn why it’s a bad idea to climb a dead tree. Meanwhile, the grown-ups don’t actually do any better. Louie’s “It’s not like things could get any worse” presages possible real disaster, though Velma’s orienteering skills (and Ralphie’s cell phone) and a reminder to Grandpa that the motto actually goes “and if we can’t fix it / we’ll reach out for help” save the day. Like its two predecessors, this entry in a solid series highlights the value of cooperation in comical ways that Myers’ cartoon caricatures of animal-headed humans ably echo. - Copyright 2020 Booklist.
