  | Full Text Reviews: Booklist - 07/01/2014 Ever since Charlie Cooper saved the bullied Marta in Houdini’s hidden tunnels (Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child, 2013), Charlie has been all over the news, and Hollywood is calling. After her agent tells her about an audition for an upcoming ABC Family show about gymnastics, Charlie is certain she would be perfect, except for the small fact that she knows nothing about being a gymnast. When mean girl Lillian tells Marta that Charlie is auditioning for a part for which Marta is better suited, the entire school turns on Charlie. She knows that Lillian is just trying to get Marta to drop out of the upcoming Junior Olympics, but how can she prove that to Marta when Marta doesn’t trust her anymore? Charlie’s razor-sharp humor is back, as are her often self-centered motives. This time she learns that she has to give up what she wants in order to help others; in fact, it’s a crucial part of friendship. Add where the previous title is popular. - Copyright 2014 Booklist. Readers will enjoy this entry more if they've already read about Charlie's adventures to make up for her bullying behavior by befriending Marta, an unpopular girl at school. At the end of Lennon's first book, Charlie had achieved personal and social success by both displaying her loyalty to Marta and discovering tunnels used by Houdini. Because of her spectacularly publicized exploits, this installment opens with Charlie planning to audition for a television series, which would, she calculates, make her the most popular girl at school and capture the attention of her classmate Bobby. But Charlie's passion for being in the limelight leads her to make a decision that puts all of that at risk. A conversation with her new agent makes it clear that Marta is actually a stronger candidate for the television role. Charlie, who is enjoying her higher social profile and writing a task list that includes items like "practice autograph," hides the truth from Marta through a complicated series of deceptions. Ultimately, Charlie's conscience and good heart win out and she tries to set things right.
