  | Full Text Reviews: Booklist - 04/01/2020 Though it spends a few sentences at the start poking fun at the elephant seal's unique appearance, this volume in the Nature's Freak Show: Ugly Beasts series (6 titles) is ultimately clearly impressed by this intriguing ocean mammal. Accessible, energetic text explores elephant seal habitats, biological adaptations, and conservation status. One chapter highlights the difference between male and female seals (tip: pay careful attention to that distinctive nose!). The eye-catching design of the book is bolstered by well-labeled, scene-stealing photos of the seals—both close-ups and action shots—and accompanying Strange But True pop-ups, which provide additional interesting facts.
