School Library Journal - 10/01/2019 Gr 4–7—In a future world where climate change has wrought its worst, Ash lives in a frozen society that prohibits music—specifically singing, which is kind of a problem when you're a Song Weaver. Banished from his wintry home after he breaks into song (even though it saves the lives of everyone on the traveling sleigh Frostheart), Ash joins its crew in a quest for his long-lost parents and the fabled city of the Song Weavers. On the way, he learns that people don't have to be blood relatives to be your family. The downside? Others want to control him, and his gift, to take over the world. Illustrator Littler has created a tale filled with adventure, humor, and unusual characters: talking yetis, anyone? But it's the appealing graphic novel–style artwork that makes this fast-paced story stand out and helps readers visualize the strange creatures and places described. The first round of evildoers is dealt with by story's end, but the main quest is unfulfilled, leaving it wide open for future installments. VERDICT Highly recommended for upper elementary and middle school readers.—Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TX - Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 11/01/2019 Young Ash has had a rough start in life: his parents failed to return from a mysterious expedition, his guardian is a grumpy yeti, and his remote, perpetually snow-covered village lives under constant threat of attack by fearsome dragon-like creatures. To make matters worse, Ash’s one source of comfort, his singing, is forbidden in the village. Resigned to a humdrum existence, he finds hope in the arrival of a cargo sleigh ship captained by a jovial, peg-legged walrus, who takes Ash onboard, jump-starting his quest to find his parents and learn about the power of his forbidden songs. Littler has built a marvelous world, packed with convincing details—bolstered by a heavy dose of lively illustrations—that make the setting come alive. The cast is diverse and wonderfully layered, and while there’s plenty of action, the book isn’t afraid to stop and breathe when needed. Readers will delight in a story that explores the beauty of unconventional families, unlikely friendships, and finding the courage to become the person you were always meant to be. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
