Each title begins with attention-grabbing stories of a dog that risked its life to help humans. Lifeguard Dogs centers on Mas, a Newfoundland working in Italy as a water rescue dog. He can pull people—and even boats—to safety. Packed with photos of dogs in action, this title describes the specialized training and equipment required, such as jumping out of helicopters. The texts also examine the physical and personality traits that are needed, while a visual identifies common breeds that exemplify these traits. Other back matter includes interesting facts, a glossary, and related resources. It’s readers who are the lucky dogs with this adorable and adventurous series. - Copyright 2014 Booklist.
