Booklist - 07/01/2022 In this introduction to simple machines with a “reuse, recycle, repurpose” aesthetic, handyperson Franny repairs a wagon, a skateboard, a pedaled go-kart, and other items with used parts for an Earth Day parade, while pointing out inclined planes, wedges, wheels and axles, levers, pulleys, screws, and gears in each. To help young audiences identify all of these at work in their own surroundings, Miller adds labels, explanatory comments, and additional images, such as a shovel and a pushpin on the page about wedges, to his clearly drawn cartoon scenes and then closes with two spreads of additional common examples. Though the perfunctory plotline and lecture-like tone of the narrative give this less reader appeal than David Macaulay’s spectacular How Machines Work: Zoo Break! (2015), it makes a serviceable, matter-of-fact lead-in to more hands-on or heavy-duty approaches to the subject, like Salvatore Tocci’s Experiments with Simple Machines (2003). - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
