Booklist - 10/01/2016 *Starred Review* The September 11 terrorist attacks changed more than the face of the U.S., and this entry in the Turning Points series goes beyond the events of that day to show how they “altered American attitudes, government, and politics.” Before the attacks are explored, Murray relates the rise of al Qaeda and the Taliban, touching on the Islamic faith and noting how the extremist groups responsible are not representative of the beliefs of most Muslims. In taut narrative prose, the events of 9/11 unfold, transporting readers to each hijacked plane with descriptive passages and quotes from individuals on board. Though the text draws upon phone conversations and flight recorders, direct citations are not provided; however, there is a selected bibliography. Manhattan cleanup efforts are accompanied by a new war on terror, which is met by a mixture of sympathy and criticism by U.S. allies. Readers will also learn about new government organizations and policies instituted in the wake of 9/11. In the publisher’s trademark style, large photo illustrations of the day’s destruction and the faces of those involved—terrorist and victim alike—fill many pages and, in some instances, slice through the center of spreads. “Pointing Out” boxes offer quick explanations of relevant topics, and an appended time line helps to organize events. This highly readable and balanced account places events in a global context while handling the tragedy with respect. - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
