Booklist - 04/01/2016 Mardi Gras gets an upbeat treatment in this selection from the Story of Our Holidays series. The book covers the history of Mardi Gras and its religious origins, the way it’s celebrated throughout the world (though most specifically New Orleans), people who make Mardi Gras possible (like the the krewes), the carnival clubs that put on the parades, and some of the ways, besides parades, that Mardi Gras is celebrated. A recipe for gumbo and mask instructions are pluses. Although the book is only 32 pages, that’s still a mite long to fill with Mardi Gras lore, so there is some repetition. Such a visual holiday could have used more photos, too, though the ones present are crisp and transmit the excitement. As the book states about this holiday, “There is no other quite like it.” - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
