School Library Journal - 04/01/2015 Gr 4–7—Four popular sporting events get a lively overview in these well-written books, supplemented by good photos and graphics. Short chapters limn the history of each event, accompanied by a time line noting milestones. Rules, equipment, venues, and how an individual or team qualifies are also covered; the Boston Marathon's rigorous qualifying process includes competing in "feeder" races. Fascinating facts (the average pit stop is "just 10–14 seconds") and anecdotes fill these pages. Excellent conclusions consider the impact of these events: Little League World Series notes that 42 participants have gone on to Major League careers and that the event draws a huge television audience. VERDICT Both readable and balanced, these well-crafted books help young sports fans connect with social studies and history. - Copyright 2015 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
