Booklist - 03/15/2016 This well-organized volume in the Who’s Your Candidate? Choosing Government Leaders series helpfully presents a basic overview of presidential elections in a roughly chronological order, moving from the concept of a president to how elections happen (including the electoral college) to the practical things a president needs to lead, like trusted advisors and a worthy vice president. Each two-page spread features a large-format photo, some clearly written information, and flashy inset boxes, including an occasional feature titled “Your Turn,” which connects presidential elections to something more in reach for the audience: school elections. The advice for getting involved ranges from pragmatic, such as learning the requirements for running for student council, to subjective, such as the importance of keeping campaign promises. Rajczak recommends that students get involved not only in classroom politics but also local and state campaigns, noting that, while they won’t be able to vote yet, it’s still helpful to “practice voicing your beliefs loud and clear.” The information about presidential elections will be clarifying in this election year, and the connection to school politics will help drive the message home. - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
