Booklist - 10/01/2017 Be CAREFUL when you go OUTSIDE! Or you may be GORED, STOMPED, STUNG, or PUNCTURED to DEATH! And you will DIE! This is the message of this irresistible picture book, sufficiently sophisticated for even an upper-elementary crowd. Profiles of 13 of the world’s deadliest animals—those that lurk in ocean depths, swamps, forests, jungles, rain forests, or mountain tops—address confrontational and defense behaviors, warning signs, and what to do in case of encounters (plus pretty vivid descriptions of what happens should anyone ignore the book’s advice). The digitally rendered illustrations feature muted, outdoorsy colors (browns, greens, blues) that calmly mitigate the scintillating text. Readers are encouraged to hunt for critters skulking in each two-page spread (a key at the end lists the number of animals per picture). There are no cited resources or source notes, but the information is solid and offers bonus material (outdoor adventure preparation; poison versus venom). This is sure to enthrall animal-lovers—or, at least, get their attention. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
