School Library Journal - 05/01/2019 Gr 5–7—This well-organized series examines the challenging but ultimately successful efforts to protect threatened animals. A brief history of the species' decline and a general overview of animal conservation opens each book, along with a look at the animal's importance within its ecosystem. Multiple examples of conservation efforts are introduced, including activities by scientists, zoos, and conservation groups. The challenges of regulating habitat loss, hunting, and human encroachment are included along with the success stories, effectively conveying the complexities of species protection. Individual scientists and conservationists are briefly profiled; the importance of collaboration among groups and nations is also emphasized. Visual content includes a good mixture of photographs showing animals, humans, and preservation projects, along with charts and range maps. Closing pages describe future prospects and offer a few ideas for how readers can support conservation efforts. VERDICT Good choices for research and reports. - Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
