  | Full Text Reviews: Booklist - 11/01/2016 Pat, Coop, and Kate are above ground and on the run. They narrowly escaped the Deep, a community hidden in New York City’s tunnels, led by Kate’s evil genius uncle, Lod. The plan is to meet up in Portland, Oregon, but Kate is captured instead. She leaves a string of clues, which the brothers follow, trailing her down the Oregon coast into the Redwoods. Alex, the librarian and estranged brother of Lod, who helped them escape from the Deep, helps with the chase, but normally trusting Coop questions his motives. The narration alternates between Coop and Kate, but without the intriguing premise of an underground community, this is less successful than its predecessor, Beneath (2015). The chase feels slow, and the characters’ motivations and interactions are not strong enough to overcome the improbable story line.
