Booklist - 04/15/2022 In this companion to his first memoir, The Boy Who Failed Show and Tell (2021), Sonnenblick chronicles his sixth-grade year. In addition to the hard knocks resulting from crazy bike challenges involving multiple ramps and a steep hill (not to mention a profound admiration for Evel Knievel), he recounts his first experiences with dating a girl, having braces on his teeth, and fighting while surrounded by screaming sixth-graders. One memorable chapter recalls the day he learned that one of his heroes, John Lennon, had died, while another describes the incidents that led him to return to Hebrew school (after five days as a dropout) and train for his bar mitzvah. A parent and a former teacher, Sonnenblick writes about both the adults and the kids in his story as individuals with their own strengths, weaknesses, and individual quirks, as seen through 11-year-old Jordan’s eyes. Written in present tense and illustrated with lively line drawings, the narrative is often amusing and consistently involving. An engaging choice for memoir assignments and essential reading for Sonnenblick fans. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
