Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 02/15/2020 Walter lives in the dullest town imaginable, where everything is gray and covered in smog. His mother's family is in the mortuary business, but Walter is more interested in inventing beautiful things, just like his father did before his untimely death. Unfortunately for Walter, nobody else in his dreary town, including his mother, appreciates his inventing. In a rush of frustration, Walter decides to run away, having found an invitation addressed to him from the famous inventor Horace Flasterborn. He takes his dear friend Cordelia (loosely modeled after the author's own mother) along for the ride and finds all sorts of adventures on the way. Walter is a pragmatic child with a good, earnest heart, which makes certain events in the story all the more heartbreaking, as it deals heavily with death and finding one's place in life. All this is allayed by fantastically described scenes and quick pacing, and readers can look forward to a satisfying ending. Lovers of the fantastic, à la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will feel right at home with Walter's imaginative journey. - Copyright 2020 Booklist.
