When danger knocks! / When evil runs amok! / We need ourselves a chicken, now—we need our Thundercluck!” Spun up from a 2016 film short, this rousing adventure introduces a new hero to the world. Born of Thor’s favorite hen, with the power to call down lightning, Thundercluck was raised in secret on a farm in Midgard and now returns to Asgard in triumph—only to join beloved young Valkyrie Brunhilde in a sprint through the Norse worlds when Thor is kidnapped by evil chef Gorman Bones. Battling monsters (lots of monsters) and learning to conquer his fears as he goes, the canny cockerel faces his foe at last in the volcano-fired Kitchen of Destiny, where he attempts to rescue Thor, save Valhalla, and escape becoming the main ingredient in a cauldron of Chicken Soup for the Wretched Soul. Along with his manga-eyed, fiercely cute companion, this plucky pullet strikes suitably heroic poses in the blocky, comical illustrations. What will readers think of his epic debut?
