Booklist - 05/15/2016 With an old-fashioned palette of blue, black, and red, these clever cartoon-influenced illustrations will hook young readers. Broken up into small and large panels, they emphasize a boy, his dog, the water they are fishing in, and the letters they are catching. Yes, letters: though wordless, this story relies on the alphabet. When the boy and his intrepid dog push out into deep water, they are hoping to snare a FISH. At first all goes smoothly, but when the fisher gets snagged by an H, he goes overboard into a school of letters. A hard-won tug of war promises victory, until a swarm of Bs rocks those plans. Luckily, the boy’s sailor dog, adorably expressive with a happy grin, comes to the rescue. When the friends finally race ashore, readers will see why it was so important for the duo to catch the letters. Children and parents who enjoy wordplay and appreciate visual aids will savor this adventure story and its clever use of graphics. - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
