School Library Journal - 08/01/2016 Gr 2–4—Ever wonder who watches over P.S. 1000 at the end of the day? The Class Pet Squad! They are a no-nonsense group made up of classroom critters. Max, a hamster, leads the team. The members include a turtle named Julius, Rhonda the lizard, Suzu the bunny, and three mice called the Maestros. When a beloved, and oft-abandoned, toy is left at school, the members of the Class Pet Squad make it their mission to return the toy to its owner by bedtime. With the assistance of a nasty rat and his band of wily cockroaches, they conjure up a dog-shaped "Woof-a-Matic" to help them. The pen and ink drawings are clean and modern, and the writing is amusing and accessible. While the characters are somewhat corny, younger readers will root for them. The message of teamwork is highly emphasized, yet the resolution is somewhat tame. Readers seeking more involved stories of animal teamwork will be better off with Cynthia Rylant's Gooseberry Park series. VERDICT A humorous tale of animal teamwork that will appeal to newly independent readers.—Sada Mozer, Los Angeles Public Library - Copyright 2016 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 08/01/2016 Ever wonder what the class pets do after all the students have gone home? Yaccarino imagines those lovable creatures as protectors of the school and its students. When Ben McGillicutty forgets his special Sharkman toy at school, it is up to Max, a hamster, and the rest of the Class Pet Squad to take the toy directly to Ben’s home. The Pet Squad uses its skills and resources to devise a plan that will get it to Ben’s home undetected and before bedtime. Yaccarino’s story is perfect for adventure lovers in elementary school. The narrative is exciting, and the illustrations serve as an additional guide that makes the story easy to understand. The social order described between the class pets and the Second Street Specials (the animals and rodents that live on the streets), however, as well as Max’s occasionally harsh demeanor toward some team members might be worth discussing with young readers afterwards. Nevertheless, kids will enjoy this imaginative peek into pets’ secret lives. - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
