Booklist - 12/01/2022 Faizah is excited about picture day at school because it means she gets to wear the red dress that once belonged to her older sister as well as her mother. At school, the teacher asks the children to imagine the sort of world they want. Faizah decides she wants a kind world where there is always a friend close by, and at recess she and her friend Sophie go about creating exactly that. They play the games their peers want and help out when friends need an extra hand. When recess is over and it’s time for the class picture to be taken, everyone has a big smile, thanks to all that shared kindness. Then it is time for sibling photos, and Faizah is devastated to see that she and her sister Asiya do not match at all. Fortunately, since it is a world of kindness, someone comes to her rescue, and all is well. This cheerful multicultural book, brimming with optimism and hope, will make a lovely read-aloud or bedtime story. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
School Library Journal - 03/17/2023 PreS-Gr 2—The Proudest Blue was a tale of family; this new book radiates outward, creating a vibrant landscape of mutually compassionate acts. Muhammad and Ali use the backdrop of school picture day to demonstrate the strong bonds between friends who serve, as Faizah creates her ideal "kind world" by helping members of her class. But instead of veering into The Giving Tree-like territory of self-sacrifice, this story shows how Faizah still needs help through a dark moment herself. This gentle exchange of love goes both ways, creating a joyous tale of strengthening community by lifting up one another. Ali's vibrant illustrations perfectly enhance these messages, most assuredly in spreads where friends twirl together, focusing on what connects them rather than what drives them apart. It may prove long for very young readers, but the message is perfect as well as vital for elementary children. VERDICT An exuberant follow-up to The Proudest Blue, this should join that one on the shelves.—Cat McCarrey - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
