Booklist - 03/01/2026 *Starred Review* Focusing on daily natural rhythms of the flora and fauna that are active during dusk and dawn, Atkins artfully explores the tenor of nature's transitions between light and shadow during twilight. Rabbits and deer snuffle for their last morsels of dinner before night falls; the evening primrose and morning glories both waft their fragrance in the fleeting moments between night and day. The author embellishes these gloaming hours with luminescent lyrics—each page flowing naturally and as beautifully as their respective illustrations. Morin’s layered gouache-and-watercolor artwork expertly reflects the hazy half-light between day and night, offering twilight’s purple skies, emerald green verdure steeped in dusky shadow, and peach waters reflecting the dim rays of dawn, while dense foregrounds feature highly detailed masses of plants populated by insects, spiders, birds, and mammals, all of which are depicted with scientific realism. An exceptional visual guide and glossary in the back matter identify and categorize the creatures and plants into their temporal niches and detail ecological context for the more science-oriented readers. A perfect nonfiction bedtime story for nature-loving children and a luminous guide for those drawn to the science of these special, subdued hours of the day. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
