But the origin stories of objects like the American flag, the national flora and fauna, and the Liberty Bell are not always clear. This nonfiction collection connects young readers to the histories behind many of the popularly recognized emblems of US identity through concise language and accompanying illustrations. While the book appears dense in the quantity of text used, the tone is conversational and approachable for young readers. Black-and-white illustrations are featured throughout and enhance the visual intrigue, and though these images are not in color, they utilize a friendly, cartoonlike design that helps readers better internalize the text. Pops of red and blue mark chapter headings and page numbers. Photos and reproductions are plentiful. This book focuses primarily on the white, male, European-centric elements of American history, though occasional mentions of slavery and Indigenous peoples and lands are included.
